No Greater Anglia trains run on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and last year services wound down by 10pm on Christmas Eve. 2026 works are due by late October.

There will be no trains from any Broadland station on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. That much is fixed every year. What changes is the engineering work on either side, and Greater Anglia and Network Rail have not yet published their plans for Christmas 2026. Last year the announcement came on 29 October.

This page covers the stations on the Bittern Line (Salhouse, Hoveton and Wroxham) and the Wherry Lines (Brundall Gardens, Brundall, Lingwood, Acle, Buckenham, Cantley and Reedham), plus connections to London from Norwich.

The quick answer

  • No trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Last year the only Greater Anglia trains on 26 December were Stansted Express services.
  • Christmas Eve finishes early. Last year most services stopped by 10pm.
  • Before Christmas: Wherry Line works on 21 and 22 November 2026. Trains to Great Yarmouth run via Acle only, with buses between Lingwood and Reedham.

What last Christmas looked like

Greater Anglia’s 2025 travel advice was first published on 29 October 2025 and updated through to 19 December (Greater Anglia issues travel advice for Christmas and New Year). It said:

  • Christmas Eve: an early shutdown, with most services finishing by 10pm.
  • Christmas Day: no services at all.
  • Boxing Day: only a revised Stansted Express between Tottenham Hale and Stansted Airport.
  • 27 to 31 December: most services running, with some amendments.
  • New Year’s Day: a bank holiday timetable.
  • Monday 5 January: normal services back across most of the network.

The big disruption was in London. Liverpool Street was closed from 25 December to 1 January inclusive for roof and Bishopsgate tunnel work, and many London trains started and ended at Stratford instead, with tickets accepted on the Elizabeth line and Underground into central London. There was also a major resignalling closure around Cambridge.

Those are 2025’s arrangements. The 2026 pattern will be different: this year Christmas Day is a Friday and the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December (GOV.UK bank holidays).

Engineering work already published for November and December

National Rail’s list of planned works for the Norwich lines currently runs to early December. Nothing is listed yet for Christmas week.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November: Wherry Lines. Buses replace trains between Norwich or Oulton Broad South and Lowestoft. Trains between Norwich and Great Yarmouth run via Acle only, with no services via Reedham, and a replacement bus runs between Lingwood and Reedham via Cantley. If you use Buckenham, Cantley or Reedham, that weekend is a bus (National Rail: Norwich and Lowestoft).

Same weekend, main line: the 23.30 from Liverpool Street on the Saturday night ends at Ipswich, with a bus on to Stowmarket, Diss and Norwich. On the Sunday morning the 06.55 from Norwich to London is replaced by a train starting at Ipswich at 07.41 (National Rail: Ipswich and Norwich).

Sunday 6 December: cancelled. Work between Buckenham and Lowestoft that was planned for 6 December has been called off and trains will run normally (National Rail).

Buses

Bus operators publish festive timetables in December. First Norfolk and Suffolk’s pages from last Christmas have been taken down, so there is nothing current to report.

The most recent festive release First still carries is from December 2024, when it ran an hourly Boxing Day service on five Norwich lines (Pink 11, Orange 21, Red 23, Blue 25 and 26, and Purple 37), with first buses into the city between 8am and 9am and last departures between 5.36pm and 6.20pm (First Bus, 13 December 2024). Whether it does the same this year is not yet known.

Parking

Broadland’s eight council car parks are all free, so there is no Christmas concession to wait for. The one to watch is Brundall, The Street, with a two-hour maximum stay. Details are on our parking in Broadland page.

Still to be confirmed

  • Greater Anglia’s Christmas 2026 advice, including last trains on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Expected around the end of October.
  • Network Rail’s Christmas engineering programme for Anglia.
  • Festive bus timetables, usually in December.

For everyday journeys, see train times to London and roadworks and travel. If you are around over the holiday, the Christmas bin collections page will carry the revised rounds when they are published.
