Strumpshaw and Norwich North tips open 9am to 4pm every day but Wednesday, and shut on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. You must book. Mayton Wood is closed.

Broadland’s two tips, at Strumpshaw and Norwich North near Horsham St Faith, are open 9am to 4pm every day except Wednesday. You have to book a free 15-minute slot before you go, even if you walk in. The old Mayton Wood tip near Coltishall has closed and is not coming back.

Norfolk County Council runs the recycling centres, not Broadland District Council, so the booking, the rules and the charges all sit on the county’s website.

Sources: the council’s pages for Strumpshaw and Norwich North, read on 25 September 2026.

Strumpshaw is the one for Brundall, Blofield, Acle and the villages east of Norwich. The council’s directions: leave Brundall heading east towards Strumpshaw, go under the railway bridge, take the next right into Stone Road and follow it for about a mile. It can shut for up to 30 minutes at a time while the containers are swapped.

Norwich North is off the A140 junction with the Broadland Northway (A1270). It is the bigger site, and the only one of the two that takes the awkward items. The council currently asks drivers not to park on Morse Road or in the junctions, because construction work nearby has put more lorries on the road.

Where Mayton Wood went

Mayton Wood, at Little Hautbois near Coltishall (NR12 7JX), is listed by the county as closed. The council’s own notice points people to Norwich North, or to Worstead outside North Walsham, which has no reuse shop (Mayton Wood Recycling Centre (closed)).

When it consulted on the closure in May 2023, the council said shutting the site would save £70,000 a year and that use of Mayton Wood had fallen by just over a third since Norwich North opened in 2021 (consultation notice, 15 May 2023).

For Wroxham, Coltishall and Horstead, Worstead is often the nearer of the two. It is at Sandy Hills, Old Yarmouth Road, North Walsham NR28 9LX, with the same 9am to 4pm, closed-Wednesday hours, and like Strumpshaw it takes no fridges, freezers, tyres, plasterboard, upholstered seating or trade waste (Worstead Recycling Centre).

Christmas and New Year

The county’s bank holiday page says the recycling centres “are open as normal over most bank holidays but are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day” (Norfolk County Council, bank holidays).

This year that works out as follows:

Date Day Tips
23 December Wednesday Closed (weekly closure)
24 December Thursday Open, 9am to 4pm
25 December Friday Closed
26 December Saturday Closed
28 December Monday (bank holiday) Open, if the usual rule holds
30 December Wednesday Closed (weekly closure)
31 December Thursday Open, 9am to 4pm
1 January Friday Closed

One thing the council has not spelled out is Monday 28 December, the substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day. Its rule says the tips open on bank holidays other than the three named days, so we expect them open, but we will check this against the council’s Christmas notice in December. For last-minute shutdowns in snow or high wind, the county keeps a live closures page, which showed no closures on 25 September.

Real Christmas trees can go to the recycling centres. If you have a Broadland garden waste bin there is usually a kerbside collection in January too: see our Christmas bin collections page.

Booking

You book one 15-minute slot at a time, but you can book as many slots as you need. You give your name, address, email, the registration of the vehicle you will use and whether you are bringing DIY waste (How to book to visit a recycling centre).

  • Walking in? You still book: there is a pedestrian option on the form. You cannot park outside and carry waste in.
  • Reuse shop only? No booking needed to buy or donate.
  • No internet? Phone 0344 800 8020 and choose option 7.

Fridges and freezers

Because of what the council calls a national shortage of specialist processing capacity, only seven Norfolk tips now accept fridges, freezers and other cooling appliances. In Broadland that means Norwich North only. The council is asking people to hold on to working or safely stored appliances for now, and to accept the retailer’s take-back offer when buying a new one (Change to fridge and freezer collections).

DIY waste charges

Householders can bring a small amount of DIY rubble and waste free: up to two 50-litre sacks or one item per visit, and four DIY visits per household in any four weeks. Over that, the “pay as you throw” prices per 100 litres or single item are:

Waste Price per 100 litres or item
Flat glass £6
Unsorted or non-recyclable DIY waste £7
Plasterboard (Norwich North, not Strumpshaw) £14 (£7 for half)

Staff assess the load before you unload. Cash is taken up to £10; anything above that is card only. Furniture, electricals and garden waste stay free with no visit limit (DIY waste).

What else you can buy there

Both Broadland tips sell, subject to stock: 40-litre bags of compost made from garden waste at £4.75, 220-litre compost bins at £15 (second one half price, two per customer), 26kg bags of gritting salt at £7 and garden waste sacks at £4.

Still to be confirmed

  • Monday 28 December opening, which we expect but have not seen in writing. We will check the council’s Christmas notice in early December.
  • Fridge and freezer acceptance at the smaller sites, which depends on the national capacity problem easing.
