All 44 Broadland food hygiene ratings dated September were 5s. Late August results added since include a 1 for a Taverham takeaway and two 2s in Drayton.

Every Broadland food business inspected in September so far has come away with the top hygiene rating. The Food Standards Agency register now carries 44 Broadland ratings dated September, and all 44 are a 5.

The month was heavy on school kitchens. Ten of the 44 were school, nursery or school club kitchens, inspected as the new term started. Five were care homes and four were pubs or social clubs, including The Bull on Reepham Road in Hellesdon and The Longe Arms in Spixworth.

The less flattering news comes from August. Fourteen ratings dated August appeared on the register after our August roundup went out on 1 September. They include a 1 for a takeaway in Taverham and two 2s in Drayton.

Seven of the September businesses have no street address on the register. The Food Standards Agency withholds the address where a business runs from a private home, so home bakers and mobile caterers show only a postcode district.

The newest Broadland rating on the register when we read it on 2 October was dated 25 September. As in August, inspections from the last days of the month may still appear. We will count them in the October roundup.

The wider picture

Broadland’s register held 965 food businesses on 2 October. Of those, 912 carry a numbered rating, 29 are exempt and 24 are waiting for a first inspection.

805 of the 912 rated businesses hold a 5, or 88.3%. On 1 September it was 791 of 903, or 87.6%. Another 78 hold a 4, down from 86. Twenty-nine sit at 3 or below.

Bar chart of current Broadland food hygiene ratings on 2 October 2026: 805 businesses rated 5, 78 rated 4, 15 rated 3, 9 rated 2, 4 rated 1 and 1 rated 0.

The district’s only zero is still New China on Thunder Lane in Thorpe St Andrew, rated on 14 July. Eleven weeks on, the register shows no newer rating and does not list it as awaiting one.

What it means for you

A rating reflects what an inspector found on one day. It is not a verdict on the food.

  • Every rated business can be looked up free on the FSA’s register, which is the only official source. Third party listings copy it and go stale.
  • A business that thinks its rating is wrong can appeal in writing to the council within 21 days of being told the rating.
  • A business can ask for a re-visit once it has made improvements, and can publish a “right to reply” that appears on the register next to its rating.
  • Concerns about a food business in Broadland go to the council, which runs the inspections, through its food premises complaints pages.

Ratings for the businesses in our Broadland business directory come from the same register.
